“His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been caused to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters.” Revelation 1:15
This is what John heard and saw in a vision on the island of Patmos. When I read this scripture the first time I did not understand what it meant by the voice of many waters. I did some research and found that it has several meanings. It is described as immense power, divine authority, majesty and life-giving force. It’s a voice that demands attention and speaks of Christ’s sovereignty and awesome presence. There is a seriousness about it. These are all true and I agree with all of them but I found something a little deeper and more personal for me about His voice.
Have you ever experienced something coming to your attention by way of your eyes, ears or any of your other senses over and over again in a short period of time. Let me give you an example. Let’s use a door. The Lord has used doors in the past to speak to me. Let’s say that night I have a dream. I’m not sure where I am and walking up to a closed door and opening it. That is it for the dream. The next morning when I open the door in my bedroom for fresh air it suddenly slams shut out of nowhere. I then get ready to leave the house and my front door has swelled from the heat of the day and is sticking and hard to get open. I then go out, get in my car and head down the road. I come to the first stop light and a semi is beside me with pictures of doors in very large print. This may sound very exaggerated but I have experienced this. It is in that moment that the Lord has my full attention. I stop whatever I’m doing and say, “What are you saying to me because you obviously have a message about a door.”
I take the time right then to acknowledge Him. I move away from where I’m at that moment and say, “I must go see what He is saying to me.” This is what Moses did when he saw the burning bush.
Exodus 3:3 So Moses said, “I must turn aside now, and see this marvelous site, why the bush is not burned up.”
This is what I call the voice of many waters. No matter where I turn or what I see or where I go it’s there right before me. It’s a thunderous voice I can’t ignore. I can’t push it aside and keep going. I know that it’s Him and I take the time to listen.
The next time that you experience something like this stop, turn aside and ask the Lord what message He is trying to deliver to you. He loves it when we pay attention and listen to what he is saying to us. It’s the voice of many waters!
