Dianna DeYoung Abundant Life

Experience the abundant life He came to give us

Young Timothy

“Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, and in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12

In this verse Paul was telling Timothy not to “act” but to “live” these areas out in his life. There is a big difference between acting and living it out. One is formality and the other is out of a sincere heart and love relationship with the Lord.

I have reflected back on Timothy’s life many times. I can relate to him because I feel like I can be intimidated by my weaknesses. I am so proud of how Timothy handled situations and would always continue moving forward. Paul was encouraging Timothy to live in such a way that there would be evidence that he was called by God to preach. This scripture comes to mind.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Mathew 5:14-16

Some areas of weakness for Timothy were, he was young, timid, sickly, no formal education, no money and no social status. How many of these could we mark off in our own lives?

Timothy had a choice to allow his weaknesses to stop him or to set them aside and allow the Holy Spirit to work through him in a mighty way. How easy it is to get caught up in our weaknesses and allow them to take us down.

One thing that I have found very helpful is that I remind myself I am before an audience of One. Not only did Timothy set aside any weaknesses but also the intimidation that comes from those around us about our weaknesses. We answer to only one Lord. Timothy chose to follow Paul’s instructions and to do it with excellence!

I shared a few posts back titled “In My Mind I’m Already There” referring to heaven. I think soon we will be there and I look forward to walking up to Timothy and thanking him for the example that he set for me. I would let him know he encouraged and inspired me on my journey down here.

Let us set aside our weaknesses and live out our lives with excellence before our soon and coming King!

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24
