Experience the abundant life He came to give us

A Pleasing Fragrance

“Mary therefore took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” John 12:3

I received a phone call from my friend this morning. She was sharing with me an experience about this verse that you just read. As she was sharing her experience I was taken back to a time several years ago that I also had an experience with this verse.

Let me share it. I had driven to my friend’s workplace and we were going to have lunch together sitting in my car. Before she came out my hands were very dry so I reached into my purse and pulled out my lotion to put on my hands. This was one of my favorite scents from Bath & Body. When I squeezed the lotion out into my hands and began rubbing it in, the smell of Japanese Cherry Blossom instantly filled the vehicle. I was surrounded by a very strong fragrance. At that moment I heard this verse spoken. “And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” I was taken back by what I was experiencing. I felt as if I was sitting at His feet in His presence. It was very real and tangible. I was so blessed by it.

I am now standing in my kitchen talking to my friend on the phone about this verse. As she is sharing, I am being taken back in time remembering that experience. In that moment the Lord gave me a greater revelation of what He was saying that day. He showed me that I was the sweet aroma to Him as I have been pouring out my life in a sacrificial way to Him over these years. It is a pleasing aroma to Him.

We may not realize it, but when our hearts are yielded to Jesus, there is a sweet aroma that surrounds us. In this verse, the Father was pleased, but it also shows as the fragrance filled the house, that others are impacted by it too. Perhaps that day that fragrance triggered a memory for someone else in that room and God used it to speak to them in a powerful way.

The very costly perfume that Mary poured out represents her bringing God her very best, her all. He is so worthy of our all.

As I end, I want to encourage you to hold tight to what He has spoken to you in the past because there could be more revelation to it down the road. God is so full of wonderful surprises that will always bless you!
